What each record shows

  • The name, and its other form where one is registered (often the French form)
  • Corporation number and business number
  • Status, and why it changed
  • The federal Act that governs it and when it was incorporated
  • Its registered office address
  • Its directors, as listed on the federal record
  • Annual returns year by year, filed or overdue
  • Name changes and the certificates issued to it
  • A report to download and keep on file

Where each fact comes from, and what is left out on purpose: about the data.

Not a federal corporation?

Most small businesses are incorporated in their own province. Search the register where it was formed:

Questions about searching Canadian corporations

How do I look up a corporation in Canada?

Type its name, its corporation number or its business number in the search box. Every federal corporation is searched at once with Quebec's enterprise register, registered charities, money services businesses and federally regulated banks and insurers. A corporation formed under another province's law is on that province's own register.

Is this search free?

Yes. Searching, opening a company page and downloading its report cost nothing, and there is no account to create.

Is this the official register?

No. It is built from Corporations Canada's open data and other public records. Before you rely on a fact, for a closing or a bank account for example, check the corporation's federal record or order a certificate of compliance from Corporations Canada.

Can I see a corporation's directors?

Yes, for a federal corporation. Its page lists the directors and their addresses for service as Corporations Canada's record shows them, and a director's name can be searched to find other corporations with a director of that name. Quebec's register shows its directors on the Registraire's own site.

What is the difference between a corporation number and a business number?

The corporation number comes from Corporations Canada when a federal corporation is formed, and is usually seven or eight digits. The business number comes from the Canada Revenue Agency and is nine digits. Each company page shows both when the record has a business number.

How do I check whether a business is registered with FINTRAC?

Search its name, or open the money services lookup. It lists every incorporated business on FINTRAC's money services business registry, with its status, the services it is registered for and its registration dates. A business run by an individual is not listed.

Is a bank or insurance company federally regulated?

Search its name, or open the list of banks, insurers and trust companies. It holds every institution the Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions (OSFI) regulates, from OSFI's own list. Most credit unions, and insurers formed under a province's law, are regulated by their province instead.

How current is the information?

Federal corporations are loaded each day Corporations Canada publishes new files. A corporation's directors and annual filings are checked against the federal record when its page is opened, and the other sources are loaded whenever their publishers update them.

Why can't I find a company?

It may have been formed under a province's law. This site has every federal corporation and Quebec's register; Ontario, British Columbia, Alberta and the other provinces keep their own registers, listed on the Resources page. The name may also be filed differently: try part of it, or its number.

How do I correct or remove information?

Use the Request a correction or removal page, linked at the foot of every page. We reply within 30 days and never charge. If the federal record itself is wrong, the corporation changes it by filing with Corporations Canada.
